FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is a way to encode lossless audio data (wav, aiff) with lossless compression.
The resulted files are 50-75% of the source files.

Most recent players as VLC or Foobar have the codecs included. Most burning tools too.

For convertig there are several tools, I recommend Flac Frontend.

There are other lossless compression formats as SHN, APE, TTA, MKW … but they all need extra tools to play…
